Camp Counselor/Rock Climbing Instructor Needed

Camp Fernwood is seeking a highly motivated camp counselor to teach rock climbing for the summer of 2008 (June 21st through August 15th). Camp Fernwood is a summer camp located on a beautiful lake setting in Poland, Maine. Here, you will be teaching girls ages 8-15 one of these programs. The successful candidate will be joining 100 other staff members from all over the world, where he or she will be residing in an all-girls, seven-week program filled with many different activities. Astrocamp ~ Rock Climbing Coordinator/Instructor

Come climb at Astrocamp! . We are looking for one Rock Climbing Coordinator who loves kids, loves to climb and believes that safety is essential for a good time. This person must be an energetic, dynamic, and flexible leader that has a strong focus on safety. This position reports to the Program Director of Astrocamp.

Responsibilities Include:

  • This position will be responsible for maintaining gear
  • Finding appropriate climbs
  • Teaching campers how to climb
  • Training campers in climbing safety and climbing gear
  • Training other staff in climbing
  • Organizing climbing schedule for self and 1 climbing assistant
  • Creating a community of rock climbers within camp and engendering a feeling of belonging to a club of like-minded kids.
  • Assisting with camp activities when needed

Astrocamp is a unique astronomy summer camp located in the stunning San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California. Lasers, exploding gas balls, launching rockets, assembling space stations underwater and more will keep your campers interested and amazed. Campers spend evenings looking at the rings of Saturn and beyond into deep space with our state of the art telescope program. Our adventure program takes campers rock climbing, hiking, camping and mountain biking. We are located on a 90-acre campus adjacent to a national forest; we are only minutes away from world-class rock climbing, great mountain biking, and outstanding hiking. Certified Guide Federation Seeks Executive Director

Part-time: 20 hrs per week
Compensation: $15-$20 p/h based on experience
Location: Based in Boulder, CO preferred but not required

The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the Certified Guide Federation (CGF). Works closely with the Board to develop and is fully responsible for the implementation of the strategic plan of the organization. Oversees fiscal, operational, and administrative management of the organization. Oversees the development and implementation of fund raising strategies. The ED is the primary spokesperson and representative of the organization, interacting with members, the climbing community, land managers, the climbing industry, the media, and the general public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Develop operational plan to achieve the strategic goals of the organization.
  2. Manage the organizations insurance and permits.
  3. Manage all aspects of membership, development, benefits, and communications.
  4. Prepare a comprehensive annual budget and administer the funds of the CGF and monitor monthly cash flow in accordance with this budget.
  5. Develop and implement a marketing and fund raising plan.
  6. Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with land managers, donors, industry and other climbing and outdoor organizations including but not limited to the AMGA, IFMGA, and ACMG.
  7. Act as professional advisor to the Board on all aspects of the CGF's activities.

Qualifications:

The CGF ED must be a strong leader with excellent communication skills and the ability to work with a very diverse population. Management, administrative, and financial planning skills are all required, and experience in fund raising and development is a plus.  Understanding of the guiding world and the climbing industry is important as is the ability to think creatively and strategically about the mission of the CGF.  Must be able to multi task and perform with limited to no supervision.

Location: San Francisco Bay Area, Northern California, Yosemite, Lassen, Sequoia

Outdoor Adventure Club (www.outdooradventureclub.com)is expanding its guiding staff and encourages qualified candidates to apply.

The Outdoor Adventure Club has been organizing and executing excellent outdoor adventures since 1996. We have an emphasis in rock climbing, backpacking and hiking, kayaking and mountain biking. We operate all over northern California, including the Bay Area, Yosemite, Tahoe, Lassen, Sequoia, and Pinnacles.

The ideal candidate possesses a valid Wilderness First Responder certification and American Mountain Guides Association training as either a Top Rope Site Manager or Single Pitch Instructor. The ideal candidate will also have leadership experience in at least two the following areas:

  • Rock climbing
  • Backpacking
  • Hiking
  • Mountain biking
  • Backcountry skiing/snowboarding
  • Sea Kayaking
  • Surfing

Additionally, you should have excellent people skills, and a solid understanding of customer service. Access to reliable transportation is a necessity. Being able to cook in the woods is a big plus, too!

Outdoor Adventure Club guides are responsible for planning, prepping for, and executing exceptional outdoor adventures, primarily for adults. Our trips are primarily on weekends, both day trips and overnight adventures. Our trips take place throughout northern California, as well as international destinations in Peru, Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, Russia, and Africa.

Employment is steady and seasonal, now through September or October, possibly leading to year round employment. The regular "work week" is Friday-Sunday, and guiding work is available every weekend. Additional hours/days are available midweek to fill administrative roles, as well.

Candidates with an abundance of personal experience in the outdoors, but no training or certifications are encouraged to apply as well. There are opportunities for "guides in training" to build leadership experience through the Outdoor Adventure Club.

The "corporate culture" of the Outdoor Adventure Club is not very corporate, but is very professional. We recognize that interesting, free-spirited personalities are drawn to guiding, and we do our best to be as flexible as possible with scheduling. We encourage our guides to pursue their personal outdoor goals while employed by the Outdoor Adventure Club.

Compensation ranges from $100-$150/day for lead guides. Additional benefits include access to pro-forms, use of OAC rental equipment, and opportunities to participate in great OAC trips. Additional benefits, including paid vacations and training scholarships are available to guides who show a commitment to the organization by guiding consistently for more than one year.

OUTDOOR PROGRAM ASSISTANT DIRECTOR and CLIMBING PROGRAMS COORDINATOR — St. Lawrence University

St. Lawrence University seeks a climber to fill the recurring, nine-month (Aug. 15-May 15) position of Assistant Director in the Outdoor Program.  The Outdoor Program provides quality outdoor recreational and educational programming to the campus community, both locally in the Adirondack Mountains and throughout North America.  Position responsibilities include supervision, management and continued development of an indoor climbing facility, and local and expedition-style climbing programs. The position requires leading novice and experienced students on appropriate climbing and mountaineering courses as well as monitoring on-site and field risk management. Administrative duties of the Outdoor Program include managing budgets, training and managing student workers, marketing courses and events, and planning logistics for weekend and extended courses.

Candidates must have a B.A. or B.S. and be WFR certified.  Professional certifications from appropriate organizations are desirable.  Professional experience with organizations such as NOLS, Outward Bound or similar programs including college outdoor programs is preferred. Experience is required leading and instructing multi-pitch climbs, teaching a full climbing curriculum indoors and outdoors, managing daily operations of the climbing wall, leading extended wilderness trips, and teaching outdoor leadership. Alpine and Rock Guide needed for 2008 in the Sierra Nevada.

Sierra Mountain Center is a small company based in Bishop and we have two alpine and or rock guide openings for 2008. Although many Sierra climbs are rock the context is an alpine environment and takes alpine training or certification. This position is possibly year round. Current WFR required and certification, avalanche training, LNT pluses.

Apprentice position; ideal for someone starting their guiding career and to gain experience. An AMGA rock or alpine course is the basic training required. This position is for summer only.
